The Chicken and Egg Situation of Hong Kong
You can't play a course because you don't have a handicap certificate, you can't get a handicap certificate without playing a course! Seems like there's no answer to this conundrum, or is there? We have the different ways you can gain your handicap here in Hong Kong and some are easier than you think.
Now before we begin let's explain: What is a handicap? Golf handicaps are a number that represents the golfer's ability based on their previous golf round's scores. It serves the purpose of comparing your performances with other golf players. For men, your golf handicap is generally between zero and twenty-eight, and, for women, between zero and thirty-six.
The next question: Why are they needed in Hong Kong? Most courses around the world would ask you for your handicap certificate if you are a visitor (municipal courses usually the exception). This is an easy way for the golf clubs to know 1. you can play and 2. you won't make a mess of their course.
If you already have a handicap from overseas you can submit your documents to HKGA who will present you with a handicap card. The new World Handicap System is a way to try and unify the handicap system. More info: www.hkga.com/handicapping

HKGA - 'Get Into Golf'
“Get into Golf” is a new golf learning initiative launched by the Hong Kong Golf Association and the Hong Kong Golf Club, which is designed especially for beginners (without handicap)! The 4-month programme includes professional instruction at both the driving range and on the golf course, and by the end you'll be issued with a HKGA handicap card!
This programme consists of 16 weeks of classes (8 weeks at the driving range + 8 weeks on the course) for a total of 32 hours of golf experience.

Kau Sai Chau - 'My First Handicap'
Golf can be played by anyone regardless of age, gender and size. Its unique handicapping system allows people of different abilities to play and compete together on a level playing field.
KSC offers a "My First Handicap" class, where our professional will guide you around the course, assisting you with useful tips on strategy, rules and etiquette, along with marking your scorecard. After the class, you can submit your 5 scorecards to the Hong Kong Golf Association and obtain an official golf handicap giving you access to golf courses all over the world.
