Kho gunning for glory and a slice of history at Fanling

Leading an eight-strong local challenge, Taichi Kho aims to enter the record books as the first player from Hong Kong, China, to win the Link Hong Kong Open.

[Oct 22nd 2025: Hong Kong] While there’s a lot to play for at the Link Hong Kong Open 2025, Taichi Kho will tee off at Hong Kong Golf Club with added incentive – to make history as the first player from Hong Kong, China, to win the illustrious event.

Kho may be up against a star-studded field, but he will enjoy the advantage of competing on home ground with strong crowd support. While the tree-framed fairways and tricky greens of Hong Kong Golf Club’s Composite Course at Fanling strike fear in many golfers, they are comfortingly familiar to Kho, who grew up playing there and is the club’s ambassador. The rising young star also made history on the same layout in early 2023, winning the World City Championship to become the first Hong Kong player to win an Asian Tour event.

“I’ve always loved playing at Fanling ever since my days as a junior golfer. It is a place that holds special memories for me, and I love the way the course tests every aspect of your game. To win your national open is every golfer’s dream, and I will be fired up to play well and put myself in contention again,” said Kho, the reigning Asian Games gold medallist.

Kho was certainly fired up at last year’s Link Hong Kong Open when, despite only recently returning to action following more than two months out with a lower back injury, he carded rounds of 67, 65, 66 and 66 to finish tied sixth on 16-under-par.

“I have many fond memories from last year’s Link Hong Kong Open. The crowd support was absolutely amazing and certainly spurred me on to put on a good performance, despite the back injury,” noted Kho.

The Link Hong Kong Open 2025 champion will receive coveted starts at the 90th Masters Tournament at Augusta National and The 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in 2026. As the seventh of nine International Series events on the 2025 Asian Tour season, the tournament will also be crucial in determining which player tops the final International Series ranking and earns a ticket to the lucrative LIV Golf League.

Should Kho top the leaderboard on Sunday, the Masters and Open starts will be an early birthday present as he turns 25 on November 13.

“Two Major starts would be the ultimate birthday gift! To have the opportunity to get into two of the most prestigious events in the world, at my home tournament at my home course, is something that is beyond words,” enthused Kho.

Kho will be joined at Fanling by fellow Hong Kong professionals Matthew Cheung, Jason Hak Shun Yat, Terrence Ng, Michael Regan Wong, Isaac Lam and Leon D'Souza, as well as the territory’s leading amateur Jeffrey Shen Wang Ngai.

Lam and D’Souza claimed the two places up for grabs at last month’s Link Hong Kong Open Qualifying Tournament, when Lam edged D’Souza by one shot. The close camaraderie of the Hong Kong players was reflected in the fact that Kho caddied for Lam in the final round, while D’Souza had Ng on his bag.

It will be a busy few weeks for Kho, Cheung, Hak and Shen indeed, as they will return to Fanling on November 13-16 to represent Hong Kong, China in the 15th National Games’ golf event. With home ground advantage, they will be one of the favourites for the men’s team gold.

The Link Hong Kong Open 2025 boasts one of its strongest fields ever, headlined by 2018 Masters winner and defending champion Patrick Reed, who plays on the LIV Golf League for the 4Aces GC team. He will be joined by fellow Major winners Graeme McDowell (Smash GC), Louis Oosthuizen (Stinger GC), Charl Schwartzel (Stinger GC), and Martin Kaymer (Cleeks GC), and English stalwart Paul Casey (Crushers GC). The line-up is bolstered by leading players from the Asian Tour and the LIV Golf League, along with young emerging talents from across the region.

One of the longest-running sports events in Asia, the Hong Kong Open has been played at Hong Kong Golf Club since its inception in 1959. The Link Hong Kong Open 2025, which tees off from October 30-November 2, is the 64th edition.

The Link Hong Kong Open 2025 is proud of being an “M” Mark event that helps enhance the image of Hong Kong as Asia’s sports event capital. The “M” Mark is awarded by the Major Sports Events Committee, symbolising intense, spectacular and signature events in the territory’s sports calendar.

In keeping with the event theme of the Link Hong Kong Open 2025 – Open For All – admission is free for the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday. Season passes, including the final two days on Saturday and Sunday, cost HK$300 for a weekend pass or HK$200 per day. Fans aged 18 and under will enjoy free entry across all four days when accompanied by a ticketed adult or by providing a photo ID showing the date of birth.
